STUCCO
Stucco is a fine mixture of gypsum or cement used for coating, decoration of walls and ceilings in the building industry and art. It is used to give a more pleasing appearance to rough surfaces such as cement, wood or metal. Polished stucco or Romano stucco is used with various pigments to mimic marble surfaces.
Its composition can be very variable, making the term stucco a category of materials rather than a specific product. Sometimes acrylic additives or glass fibres are added to increase its resistance and workable characteristics.
Historically stucco was a mixture of seasoned lime (calcium hydroxide) and marble powder.
Stucco also allows you to create three-dimensional figures and statues. Baroque architecture made wide use of stucco in buildings and churches, to realize overdoors, cornices between walls and ceilings and to surround areas. It also allows you to create a three-dimensional extension of paintings (low reliefs) and trompe l’oeil.
Some mixtures (mainly based on gypsum) are suitable for internal use, not tolerating moisture, while others are used for external decorations.
In modern usage stucco decorations are often prefabricated on slabs which are then applied where needed.
Stucco mixed with resins and glues is also used in building as a joint between two architectural elements or as an element for smoothing plasterboard walls.
