PLASTER PANELLING | HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
This kind of decorative stuccoes are plaster artifacts representing a must in decorative field, something that any art enthusiast or simply anyone who cares about his home should consider. We are talking about panelling, the excellence of furnishing in XVII and XVIII centuries in France.
The success of these seemingly simple wooden panels variously carved exploded in the centre of Europe in the last period of the kingdom, before the revolution that would have shocked it. An era marked by the taste for beauty: the palace of Versailles – restored at that time by Louis XIV – proves it. This sumptuous residence is perhaps the place that most has enhanced this kind of refined interior ornament. But Versailles is only the culmination of the success of panelling, which could not lack in any noble family house.
Because of its wide range of application, French élite appreciated it. From walls to doors, from partitions to private rooms, panelling was the delight of architects and housewives who delighted to embellish their walls in more and more original ways, entrusting to these elegantly carved wooden panels enriching functions. And very often paintings were also set into the panelling which framed them. Of course the use of these decorations spread far beyond France and also Italy – known for its excellent artistic taste – could recognize the beauty of these panels: we refer to the so-called ‘boiserie di testa’, which divides the wall without reflections and curvatures above and below it; it was born in Italy as lambrino or frame lambrino in the late nineteenth century.
